Location and How to Get There
The national park is located 3 hours drive from Arusha on a well paved road, or via plane just a 20 minute flight from Arusha ( ARK), or a 45 minute flight from Kilimanjaro (JRO). The park is about the size of Rhode Island.
Wildlife and Natural Highlights
Tarangire National Park is known for having the largest elephant population in northern Tanzania. Currently, Tarangire has 3 major elephant populations and each population has about 1,000 elephants. The national park also has plentiful numbers of zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, impalas, waterbucks, Grant gazelles, dik diks, jackals, lions, leopards, cheetahs, kudus, fringe eared oryx, eland, wild dogs, hyenas, and hippos.
View the Tarangire River which attracts animal life and has many Baobab trees. During the rainy season (November-December), it is commonplace to see tree climbing lions.
High Season
Though Tarangire National Park is interesting all year long, during the dry season (June -September) huge numbers of thirsty animals are attracted to and congregate around the banks of the Tarangire River. Its southern part has the Silale swamp that attracts animals feeding and drinking during the dry season.
Activities
In addition to game viewing, visitors can have guided walking safaris, visit Maasai and Barabaig villages.
