Location and how to get there

The Usmabara Mountains are located in northeast Tanzania in the Tanga region. Usmabara is a mountain range accessible from the town of Loshoto. Visitors can arrive from the town of Mombo which is 2 hours from Lushoto. Accommodations can be arranged at mountain lodges, hotels, campsites, and cottages.

Wildlife and Natural Highlights

The Usambara mountain range has an exceptional assortment of birds, plants and animals. It is one of the most biodiverse habitats in Africa. Its mountain range is unspoiled and covered with tropical forests. The mountain range is 70 miles long, 20-40 miles wide, and its mountains rise as high as 8,000 ft. They provide outstanding views of Kivuga and Irente peaks.

Activities

Usambara is a great place for hiking, birding, and cycling on mountan bikes. Arrangements can be made for visits to tea plantations, Maasai shops, the Lushoto market on Sunday, view Irente farm and Kivuga viewpoints, swim in its watergfalls, and enjoy forest walks in the Shume Magamba and Mazumbai forests.

Usambara Hiking: 4 Days

Day 1

Drive from Arusha to Lushoto-Tanga. Arrive for dinner and overnight
Accommodation will be at: Mullers Lodge

Day 2

After breakfast depart for walking tour to Irente View Point, an attractive view point of Lushoto town and other nearest villages. In the afternoon you will walk to Irente Lutheran Farm for fresh lunch. In the evening you will picked up and drive or you can just walk to Mullers Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3

After breakfast depart for Lushoto town tour including visiting the local market and tea plantations. Biking can also be done after the market or tea plantation tour. In the evening drive to Muller for dinner and overnight.

Day 4

After breakfast drive back to Arusha.
